Henri Reynard Speaks Out

Current Events

Ex Poser

So a lot of people got to see some uncovered flesh at the Duper Bowl last Sunday, I missed it as I have missed so many other things in the world defined by a little black box. Of course TV has made its way up from the days of "Life of Riley" to "Sex in the City" in my lifetime. I guess it is no longer a little black box. Our entertainment room has a huge TV capable of many things that I cannot seem to care enough to learn about. I gave up on Television around the time that I gave up on Professional Football. That happened sometime after my local team had an all star Quarterback who collected more in cash than the whole professional football league had when I was young. I live outside of the popular culture to whatever degree I can manage. I try to do that without getting as extreme as the various religious sects who live in communities where modern appliances and conveniences never enter. Not that I think that they are wrong, I just don't have the moral fortitude to give up some of the modern conveniences.

Evidently Janice Jackson's breast was visible for all of a few seconds. While I may consider that minor league tacky, I certainly cannot spare any of my moral righteousness in comments on that subject. I am amazed at the amount of press given to that minor exposure of skin and curved fat. If we could get the same level of moral outrage about homeless children in our very rich nation I might applaud, but in this case I just sigh with regret. It has been a very long time since I first glimpsed a human breast and stood shocked in response. I think I was around eight years old when one of my neighbor women pulled one out and started feeding her baby. Everyone in the room laughed at me a little, but not harshly, just in the kind way people have when they are letting you know that you are overreacting. Perhaps a little adult laughter is in order in regard to the whole Dupe You Bowl extravaganza.

I guess the game was a good one and the Patriots won. I guess the Patriots should win when Congress passed a law to help them; or wasn't that what the Patriot act was about? I fall behind a little on my reading and look what happens; I make a major league mistake. But in print media we have the prospect of editing everything out before our audience gets to see it. I could just remove that sentence and no one would be the wiser except the government agency that tracks every use of the word Patriot. There has to be one by now, it is probably in the Homeland Security Department, but it may be in the Pentagon. Who could tell with the Government this big and getting bigger every day? Weren't the Republicans supposed to shrink the monster? Oh right, that's Beast not Monster but first they have to bankrupt Social Security is how it goes.

I love our new budget, it puts our priorities right where they ought to be, on Defense not War. Or is the Defense budget used for wars now? This is all so confusing, it would be a lot simpler if people would just say what they mean, wouldn't it? I mean if the people who are so terribly concerned about Janet Jackson's breast appearing at half time on national TV would just say what they want us all to do. Wouldn't that leave the choice up to us whether to do it or not? It is so special that they are concerned about all of the children out there, except the ones from poor homes and the homeless ones of course. They can spare a lot of effort to denounce a flashing boob but they cannot spare any for the children living on the streets in our major cities. It makes me wonder who the boobs really are in our nation; the people who want to shelter our children from a bare breast, or those who are willing to leave them without any shelter at all. Sometimes they actually turn out to be the same people, how ironic.

I do have a short attention span when it comes to the popular music of today, and the sports events are not far behind. I played football and baseball and basketball and enjoyed them all a lot when I was young. I played both in innumerable scrub games and in organized leagues in all the sports I could. I loved watching them for years after I was done playing. Today I watch few sports shows because I have other things to do with my time that are more important to me. I am simply turned off by the excess associated with Professional Sports Today and have seen all of the scenes that happen there over and over again.

The loud braggadocio and chest thumping that goes on during most sports shows today is far too indicative of a sports culture steeped in winning at all costs for me to embrace it. I prefer the quiet elegance of hitters like Hank Aaron and the gentlemanly courage and mastery of Johnny Unitas to today's sports heroes. As for Ms. Jackson, I find her exhibitionism not surprising and simply more sad than threatening. If she was trying to get publicity she certainly succeeded in the highest degree possible. Whatever she was trying to do it hardly matters to me or my children and grandchildren as long as we all know who we are. That is the point of standing a little outside of the popular culture, it is the best way to get perspective that I have ever found. God bless and keep you all safe from the breast flashers and breast beaters alike, both need a little screw tightened somewhere in their personality if you ask me.
