Our nation in even the worst of its times has never had this much money and power aligned behind the move to the right. All of the right wing Christians, all forty million of them vote for one party. In Germany as in Italy and Spain the fascist party had a Christian base. The ownership of the press is more and more concentrated in this nation and runs closer and closer to the furthest right Fascist Party line with each month that passes. Atrocities committed by us based on our drive for power over other nations are never reported in our media, or if they are they are reconstructed into "Freedom Fights" even when we are supporting regimes more brutal than that of Saddam. The will of the people abroad is derided and denigrated in our press for failing to see how we are saving the world for democracy. Meanwhile we are appointing our own national leadership and reapportioning whole states illegally so the move to the right can be more secure.

We haven't dispensed with elections yet, nor have we eliminated opposition in the press but the loudest voices in the nation are all mouthing the same mantra. "Liberals are stupid, evil liars that hate America." Of course that is always the kind of politics that presage the great one-party movements in human history, the total denigration of the main opposing party. The next step is to take over the press by legal or illegal means. Why are a few companies controlling the major press outlets today and why is their editorial policy aligned more and more with the right wing agenda if this is not happening? The next step is the movement to a lifetime office in charge of administration of governmental affairs, a Fuehrer or a President who can be elected as long as he likes because there is no effective opposition and a legislature that rubber stamps his policies without real debate.

If you look around yourself you will see a lot of that happening. I didn't like the right wing leanings of Ronald Reagan or Richard Nixon but they were never this close to imposing Fascism on the nation. Now we have a movement, led by a few fools on the left that do not see the jaws of the trap in front of them, to repeal the term limit on the Presidency. Watch the reversal of that movement as we saw the reversal of the power of the independent council used against its originators. A reversal of that amendment will only assure the Republican Party of a longer term in office for Imperator W. If anybody doubts the capacity of this Administration to evoke a crisis to their benefit just around election time then they haven't watched the last two national elections.

Nothing would please me more than the libertarian veneer that the positive spin of the press evokes when these policies are questioned becoming real. I would love to see a real libertarian movement develop in this nation. It would revile Patriot Acts one and two and act as a real opposition to the rise of corporate power over the power of the individual. The Democratic Party is a rotting hulk with no real liberalism left in it and little power to evoke trust or emotion in its followers. Libertarianism is the remaining force in our democracy that can oppose incipient Fascism and find a compelling argument for reducing the power of Republicans in Congress the White House and elsewhere in our states. Liberalism has abandoned its populist roots and lost its way and Fascism is triumphantly parading around with its uniforms and polished brass buttons. Libertarians unite, it is going to be our time next, just expect to inherit a mess.
