Searching For Signs Of Life?
We have launched more Mars Rovers that will tell us whether life on Mars can be determined to be present or possibly ever to have been present. One major newspaper characterized it as "Searching for slime on Mars". Obviously this political season is starting our a little farther away than most. On the other hand the search for slime in the universe should really begin closer to home. We are capable of spending a billion dollars on sending robots to Mars but we are lacking the money to send our kids to school? Wow, maybe our priorities are misplaced? I am a Science Fiction fan and have loved our space programs for the science they produce and the glamour in the quest for knowledge that they offer. But if the budget for these programs can send a hundred thousand worthy students through high school then the space programs need to go. That is unless we can find the money elsewhere, which seems to be impossible due to our tax cuts. You see we are missing the point of taxes in this country, they are not to be used to support the lifestyles of the rich and famous, they are to be used for the common good. What is more in service of the common good than educating our young citizens adequately?

Now when I was a kid my parents believed in education, and so did everybody else. I was never given the chance to choose ignorance. Ignorance would certainly have been my choice over sitting in those classrooms and learning all of that stuff that I never used. Well sometimes I used it, but learning it was still boring. We all had books in those days and we all learned how to read them before fifth grade. Of course the rules of the classroom were clearly defined and teachers disciplined us with rulers if necessary in order to keep our attention focused. I wonder how our nation has lost its way so badly that we are no longer investing in our children. The very men and women who campaign on family values vote down assistance for the education of children without a qualm. Now if we can figure out how to send a kid to Mars but can't afford to teach them how to connect their space suit to its battery charger should we be surprised at the results? Or perhaps we can only send them to New York and ask them to survive without a good education; that is a real scenario. With a little luck and ability at sales they could become prosperous in the stock market, of course most of those positions go to graduates of major private colleges these days. Maybe they could drive a taxi, or learn to cook or sell pencils on street corners?

It is a truth that we are badly led today, perhaps because, in spite of all those fancy schools he attended our President got to choose ignorance over knowledge. He is however a small part of the problem. Maybe he was dyslexic or suffered from another type of learning handicap like ADHD, or maybe he was just spoiled rotten. The whole generation that he is a part of was spoiled rotten too. They take for granted the power and wealth that we enjoy, often at the expense of much of the rest of the world's people. The presence of an educated subtle man like Karl Rove in w's life is evidence of a reality of the rich and powerful in this nation today. They don't have to know much at all; they can hire the learned and the clever to help keep their career and life on track. Or daddy can do it for them. Daddy and his friends did a lot for wittle Georgie W; they gave him a clear path to the White House for one thing. And paid for it too, wasn't that nice? Unfortunately their money can't make him into the leader we need for the future of this nation. He is busy pursuing the phantom of winning a war against terrorism when our nation is in serious trouble at home. He is busy solving the world's problems by trying to shove them into our mold while our nation is growing weaker and less capable of solving its internal problems.

Unfortunately there are fewer and fewer good jobs available in our economy today and I guess that means we need fewer educated workers to fill them. If we reduce our annual investment in education we will still be able to hire enough people to do the jobs that need doing in this country. Of course the original purpose for general education in this nation was to provide the citizens with enough knowledge to see through the machinations of politicians and their parties. Neither party can find a way out of the impasse we are in today related to basic services for our children. They are both too busy courting the elderly who still vote in droves. Even more unfortunately for the future of our republic the modern fragmented family gives the aging members of our population the freedom to evade their responsibilities to their grandchildren. After all how many of you really know those little snots anyway? I accept the fact that none of the people who vote in this nation think the two party system is dead yet but it has ceased to serve us well since Vietnam ended and the Baby Boomers became dominant in politics. They are the generation that never grew up; the Peter Pan syndrome ran rampant through the nation for their years of power. Now we must face the future they created by failing in their responsibilities to all of the unborn generations in this nation.
It is a singular fact that the greatest generation, so declared by some fans of WWII and the period after, during which our nation grew vastly in power, gave birth to one of the lesser ones in history. The Baby Boomers are living up to their name, babies to the end. Their endless political squabbles over sex, abortion and drugs fail to reach the substance of the necessary debates that our society needs in order to thrive. We need to really redefine our place in the world in the light of 9/11 and the opposition to us forming in the world outside our borders. Unfortunately the guy in the White House got there because no one clearly superior was available from that sparse generation. He and his daddy's friends were able to get people to pay for the cost of his taking the office. He is certainly dedicated to a couple of propositions, outside of the sex, drugs and abortion phantoms that illuminate much of our current politics.

This President is dedicated to the proposition that religion and government do mix. He is dedicated to the proposition that tax cuts for the wealthy will make this nation richer. He is dedicated to the proposition that this nation must keep its international power by use of force. He is dedicated to the idea that we can wage preemptive war whenever we wish to do so regardless of any lack of international support. He is dedicated to the idea that thieves in charge of major banks and corporations should go unregulated and unpunished for their crimes. He is dedicated to the corruption of our political life by money and the use of it to buy office. He is dedicated to the use of nuclear arms as weapons of offense not deterrence. He is dedicated to removing the safety net called Social Security from the working people of this nation. He is dedicated to the use of deficit spending to force reductions in the size of government and to putting the burden of the debt on the middle class and its children. He is radical and dangerous to the future of this nation. His generation, the baby boomers, are buying into his deficit spending because the cost will not fall on them any time soon. He is a member of the most singularly selfish generation in our nation's history, is it any wonder than his ego is running our government, not our constitution?

This President is not dedicated to civil liberties. He is not dedicated to balanced budgets and fiscal responsibility. He is not dedicated to diplomacy and the resolution of problems by other means than force. He is not dedicated to the free practice of speech and the right of freedom of assembly. He is not dedicated to the constitution and its amendments. He is not dedicated to the resolution of racial problems only their exploitation for vote getting value. He is not dedicated to the development of healthy educational institutions, only the development of private schools through vouchers. This is in spite of the fact that public education is what has made this country so productive and innovative. He is not dedicated to substantive programs to rebuild the infrastructure of this nation. This is at a time when those kinds of programs could be used to create jobs, which are lacking in the private sector. He is dedicated to support for the Military Industrial Complex, which is often wasteful and destructive of the basic values of our nation. He is not dedicated to adequately funding homeland security. He is dedicated to being reelected at any cost regardless of what his policies promoted for their vote-getting value cost us in the long run. I wish you well, in your ongoing support for this man. This President who is dedicated to so many things that can bring ruin upon us all and not dedicated to so many of the basic values of our nation. God bless and keep you safe in times of this President who is truly a dedicated man.
