Walt Was a Genius Walt Disney, the founder of Disney Studios which has
morphed into one of our largest media companies in the last twenty
years, was heralded as a genius long before his business became a
monolith. His contributions to film and the world of entertainment
gave joy to my generation and the company that bears his name still
sets standards higher than the average in Hollywood for their products.
It is strange that I find myself in a position so contrary to the
one that Disney has chosen regarding Michael Moore's new film. The
film is probably one long funny rant or just one long rant as most
of Michael Moore's films and books have been. But the idea that Disney
can use its power to quash its release makes a mockery of freedom
of speech in the USA.
The arrogance of this giant media company has burst the bounds of tolerable behavior. I would like all of you to contemplate the world of media we live in today. Disney is trying to block the distribution of Mr. Moore's film "Fahrenheit 9/11" by Mirimax Studios. There are Media Giants in the world today and they apparently want to censor what you see read and learn about your world. If you let our media giants behave in that way they will control your mind as Orwell so accurately predicted in "1984", his novel that examined government based mind control. He did not contemplate the idea that government would privatize the mind control business along with the torture industry. Some of us have been to Disney Amusement Parks more than once, like my four year old granddaughter and her seven year old sister. They even prevailed upon their curmudgeon of a grandpa to go there with them once but torture has its limits for some of us, I will never go there again. Not because of my disapproval of the crassly commercial nature of Disney, the company. I could care less if they have the cultural standards of Donald Duck along with the business ethics of Uncle Scrooge. I will never enter a Disney amusement park again because I am not amused by the kind of crud that keeps our Media Giants alive and torturing us. Not that Disney ushers are likely to use their light sticks the way that a few of our troops did in Iraq, but watching films has never held the interest for me that it does for a lot of us in this nation. It does not reach the top of my list of things to do very often. My wife goes to movies regularly and loves them; I listen to her stories about the movie she has just seen frequently. My daughters love them, my granddaughters love them and I get to hear about them often. I find their descriptions of them more entertaining than the actual films for the most part. I have seen "Bowling for Columbine" and thought it was an interesting bit of film but a little long for the content. Sometimes film can make the people understand something worthwhile, but mostly it panders to their basest emotions. I am not allowed to ignore this media. That would be my default position, if it weren't for the women that I love. The use of film for political purposes started one day after the medium was invented and has continued without interruption into the present time. I could care less if the greatest film ever made was "Citizen Kane" or the brilliant and creative early Mickey Mouse cartoon I saw in film history class. The points about media manipulating the government that were made in "Citizen Kane" do bear remembering if we want to keep our minds partially clear of manipulation. The parallels between the run up to the Cuban Revolution, the one against Spain, and Iraq are interesting. The media lied to us all in that case too, just like they did after 9/11, and before we invaded Iraq. The government and its pet Media Giants will sometimes lie when some elected fool thinks it is in their interests to use lying to help us make the "right" decision. The media often goes along. Now we are torturing people sexually with light sticks in Iraq, what sweet glory lies in war for those who want to be fooled. Michael Moore has made a lot of money for a radical filmmaker, but his newest project is being blocked from distribution by Disney. The reason they are blocking it might be just because they think the film stinks, but I doubt it. There is speculation that threatened elimination of tax benefits in Florida might have something to do with this action. The film purportedly examines in detail the relationship between the House of Bush and the House of Saud. Particularly in light of the way the Bush Administration hustled the Bin Laden family and others out of this nation after 9/11, that may be of interest here. Particularly if Mr. Moore can get to the point that he is making somewhere during the film, which is always an open question. In any case I would like you all to call or write or send email to Disney Studios and protest this idiotic act of suppression. This film will see the light of day no matter what Disney does to try to stop it. Films are copied and distributed underground before they hit the Video Stores these days, Disney can't even stop that effectively. Our culture is adapting to the dominance of the Giant Media companies and the level of control they will have over people's minds will keep diminishing. I would like to actually go pay and see this film in a theatre not view a flickering copy on my TV but I will do what is necessary to see it. The Disney legacy has apparently become one of censorship and suppression. What a tragic stupid misuse of the company created by a genius of film and entertainment. God bless and keep you all safe and informed, regardless of what Disney, the company, wants to control. |
